Dynamic spectrum, photomorphogenesis and cannabinoids
Bern University of Applied Sciences (HAFL) is working with Future of Grow on three complementary lines of research.
The first focuses on photomorphogenesis under a dynamic spectrum: how the spectral composition of light influences the compactness, branching and yield of crops. The protocols developed are reproducible and transferable to production.
The second concerns UV-B and cannabinoids. The results are documented: controlled UV-B exposure at the end of flowering increases THC concentration by 15 to 30% and modifies the terpene profile reproducibly. These results open up prospects for high-value medical cannabis production.
The third, led by Dr Mascher, studies the control of powdery mildew on cucumber with targeted UV-B radiation, without the use of fungicides. Initial results confirm a significant reduction in disease pressure under greenhouse conditions.
Key figures
Increase measured with controlled UV-B exposure at the end of flowering
Reduction on cucumber with targeted UV-B, without chemical treatment (Dr Mascher)
Documented, reproducible modification of the terpene profile under UV-B
Controlled protocols in BFH grow rooms. UV-B exposure calibrated in intensity, duration and frequency. Chromatographic analysis (HPLC) to quantify cannabinoids and terpenes. Spore counts to assess disease pressure.
